Amid actively circulating rumors about granting the neural network expanded powers on devices of Russian users, the company "Yandex" has issued an official clarification that sets the record straight on this matter.
Official Position: Access Is Restricted
Boris Ryutin, who heads the security division for "Alice AI" and self-driving transport at Yandex, stated that talk of unrestricted access by the assistant to user data, including banking applications, is unfounded. According to him, the functionality of "Alice" on mobile devices is always strictly limited by the security architecture of the operating system. The assistant can interact exclusively with those data and functions for which the user has given explicit and informed consent.
Ryutin emphasized: "Alice AI" does not receive and will not receive any additional capabilities or advantages over foreign counterparts. It has at its disposal only the basic functions available to any pre-installed assistant. Moreover, the device owner always retains the right to choose—whether to use the Russian assistant or prefer a foreign solution. This is a fundamental principle that is not subject to revision.
The Essence of the Initiative and Market Concerns
The cause for concern was an initiative by the Ministry of Digital Development, discussed since late August. The ministry is considering the possibility of refining the rules for pre-installing domestic software on equipment imported into Russia. This applies not only to smartphones but also to tablets and "smart" speakers. Under this initiative, "Alice AI" could receive the status of a "system assistant," granting it access to system functions, notifications, and—what has caused the greatest resonance—banking applications.
Market analysts see this step as a serious risk of monopolizing the digital space by Yandex. Combining the status of mandatory pre-installation with expanded rights could place "Alice" in a unique position unavailable to any other application. That is why the company so persistently emphasizes that even in the event of changes to legislation, the technical mechanisms of the OS will not allow the assistant to gain uncontrolled access to sensitive information.

Yandex's official assurances are intended to reduce the level of public discontent, but the very framing of the question of expanding "Alice's" rights raises justified concern.
