The artificial intelligence market has just witnessed one of the most significant consolidations in its history. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has officially confirmed that an agreement has been reached to acquire Hugging Face, a leading platform for AI developers. The deal is valued at an impressive $12.93 billion, underscoring the strategic importance of this asset for expanding Nvidia's ecosystem.
Preserving openness as a key principle
In the corporation's official announcement, it is particularly emphasized that Hugging Face will continue to operate as a fully open platform. This is a fundamental point that alleviates many concerns within the community. Developers will not be forced into Nvidia's proprietary infrastructure. Users will retain full freedom to choose models, frameworks, cloud services, and computing platforms. Working with Hugging Face will not require the mandatory use of Nvidia GPUs—this is a deliberate decision aimed at preserving the trust of the vast community.
Scale and synergy
The numbers behind this platform are impressive: more than 18 million developers and researchers, over 3 million hosted models, 500,000 datasets, and 1 million applications. The service is already integrated into the workflows of over 200,000 companies worldwide. Nvidia itself notes that it has long been the largest supplier of open models and data for this platform, having published more than 500 models and 250 datasets under its brand.
Nvidia is confident that its engineering resources and infrastructure will significantly enhance the platform's reliability, security, and performance, especially in model evaluation, inference, and deployment processes. This is a logical step in the battle for dominance across the entire AI value chain.
Notably, the deal is announced against the backdrop of Nvidia's expanding partnership with Amazon Web Services. Earlier in August, the companies announced plans to deploy an additional two million GPUs in the AWS cloud in 2027–2028. This indicates that Nvidia is building a comprehensive strategy covering both hardware and key software platforms.
My analysis: This acquisition is not merely a purchase of technology but an attempt to gain control over the "social network" for AI developers. While competitors fight for computing power, Nvidia is investing in community loyalty and development standards. However, the key risk remains the balance between monetizing the platform and preserving its openness. If Nvidia manages to maintain Hugging Face's neutrality, this deal could cement its role as the primary beneficiary of the AI boom for decades.
