Analyzing the latest data on the prediction market, I am noting an unprecedented surge of interest in the Kalshi platform. In July of this year, the site attracted 15.4 million unique visitors from the U.S., whereas a year earlier this figure barely reached 1 million. It is especially telling that the American audience accounts for nearly 80% of all platform traffic—this indicates deep penetration into the key segment of retail traders.
Trading Volume Dynamics: Multi-Fold Growth Over 12 Months
An even more impressive picture is shown by trading activity. August trading volume on Kalshi reached a colossal $40 billion, which is 45 times higher than the figures for the same period last year ($874 million). Such a trajectory points to the platform's transition from a niche tool to a mainstream channel for speculative strategies.
Notably, the main driver of growth was sports contracts, which accounted for 83% of all July turnover. This dynamic is unfolding against the backdrop of Kalshi's active legal disputes with regulators in individual U.S. states. It is obvious that legal risks not only do not deter users but, on the contrary, fuel interest in the platform as a venue with high volatility and new opportunities.
From my point of view, the current figures reflect a fundamental shift in trader behavior: they are increasingly viewing event derivatives as a full-fledged alternative to traditional exchange instruments. However, such rapid expansion carries risks as well—regulatory pressure could intensify, especially if volumes continue to grow at this pace. In the coming quarters, the key indicator for investors will be not only traffic statistics but also Kalshi's ability to maintain the legality of its operations amid fragmented American legislation.
