The cryptocurrency industry is taking a significant step toward institutionalization. Ahead of the key summit The Future of Money, Governance, and the Law (FoMGL), which will take place from September 29 to October 2, 2026, in Washington and New York, the creation of a new Expert Council on Law and Regulation has been announced. This initiative, implemented in partnership with the Global Blockchain Association (GBA), marks a shift from fragmented efforts to a systematic dialogue between business and regulators.
A platform for dialogue at the highest level
The council's public debut will take place as part of the event's New York program, with the UN headquarters serving as the venue. This is symbolic: the crypto industry seeks to engage in dialogue not only with national governments but also with global institutions. The three-day GBA program will begin with discussions on Capitol Hill with American legislators, continue with a one-day summit at the National Press Club, where the central topics will be the impact of AI, blockchain, and quantum technologies on financial services, including digital assets and tokenization.
Composition of participants and scale of influence
Among the confirmed speakers are key figures from the industry and the public sector: from representatives of the UN and the U.S. Internal Revenue Service to executives from Ripple, Circle, and Coinbase. Blockchain pioneers and leading legal experts are also expected to participate. Such representation underscores that the GBA, which unites representatives from more than 500 government agencies worldwide and has over 50 working groups, is becoming the main bridge between the demands of the public sector and the expertise of private business. The Blockchain Maturity Model (BMM) developed by the association has already been recognized at the UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF).
A look at the future of regulation
The new council will focus on the practical aspects of doing business in the digital assets sphere: from choosing a jurisdiction to navigating complex tax and compliance requirements. These issues will be brought up for global discussion as part of FoMGL. Notably, some of the events will be open to the community, and a special promo code BEINCRYPTO20 has been provided for visitors from Washington to receive a discount on tickets.
My analysis: The creation of such a council is not merely an image move but a signal of the market's maturation. The crypto industry can no longer afford to ignore regulatory uncertainty. Systematic work with legislators and international organizations is the only path to sustainable growth and attracting institutional capital. The success of this initiative will depend on how well the voices of experts are heard in shaping future legal frameworks.
