A technical failure in the decentralized THORChain protocol became an unexpected factor that slowed down the process of laundering a large sum of funds stolen in the high-profile Binance hack. The incident drew the attention of blockchain analysts tracking the movement of the stolen assets.
According to data from blockchain analytics experts, the THORChain protocol was forced to suspend operations across ten blockchains. The cause was an error during a block reorganization in the Ethereum network. Although the halt was purely technical in nature, it inadvertently created a barrier for the attackers using cross-chain swaps to cover the traces of the stolen funds.
Scale of the incident
This concerns the funds stolen in the Binance hack, the volume of which is estimated at $6.3 billion in equivalent value. Attackers traditionally use decentralized protocols to split up and obfuscate transactions, which makes such services a key link in the laundering chain. The temporary unavailability of THORChain disrupted the usual route for moving the assets.
Such incidents demonstrate the dual nature of decentralized infrastructure: on the one hand, it provides tools for anonymization; on the other, its technical vulnerability can inadvertently help investigators by buying time to track fund flows.
Cryptalist analysis: The situation highlights the growing dependence of criminal schemes on the stability of DeFi infrastructure and, at the same time, its fragility. For institutional participants, this is a signal about the need for deeper monitoring of cross-chain protocols, and for the market as a whole, it is a reminder that technical failures in decentralized systems can have a real impact on the movement of large capital and the effectiveness of investigations.
