The blockchain project Lisk, whose history dates back to 2016, has announced the shutdown of Lisk Chain — a Layer 2 (L2) network built on Ethereum. The infrastructure was disconnected on November 2, marking the completion of another stage in the project's evolution: in 2024, Lisk migrated to L2 from its own Layer 1 blockchain.
The wind-down of the network is proceeding in stages. First to be closed were the portal and the cross-chain bridge that enabled users to interact with the L2 infrastructure. The remaining components are being decommissioned gradually to minimize risks for asset holders.
In parallel, the Lisk team announced the burning of approximately 5.2 million LSK tokens reserved for undistributed staking rewards. At the same time, the token itself remains in circulation on the Ethereum network and will be used in future loyalty programs.
A pivot toward B2B finance
The key vector for Lisk's further development is building an international financial platform for businesses. The team's focus includes invoicing, payment approvals, and conducting transactions in fiat currencies and stablecoins. This pivot reflects the broader trend of mature crypto projects migrating from purely infrastructure solutions to applied corporate services with real cash flow.
Abandoning its own L2 network demonstrates a pragmatic approach: maintaining a separate blockchain requires significant resources, whereas concentrating on payment infrastructure for businesses promises more tangible monetization. The burning of 5.2 million LSK further reduces the token's supply, which may support its economics during the transition period.
Cryptalist analysis: Lisk's decision reflects the growing consolidation of the L2 solutions market, where projects with a stable user flow and a clear economic model survive. Burning a significant volume of LSK reduces the circulating supply and signals discipline in tokenomics management, but the key factor for investors remains the team's ability to convert the B2B pivot into real transaction volumes and partnerships.
