The potential for private investment in applied artificial intelligence (AI) in Russia exceeds 500 billion rubles. This estimate was presented at an expert session of the Skolkovo Foundation as part of Kazan Digital Week 2026. Analysts identified the most promising niches for venture investments, while banks and telecom operators are already actively using AI to protect clients from fraud and speed up service.
AI enables businesses to speed up employee work and reduce costs, but implementation requires not only one-time investments in equipment, but also ongoing expenses for maintenance and cloud data processing. If a company does not budget for these expenses, the project will quickly become unprofitable.
How banks use AI and where investors are looking
The largest financial institutions are developing AI projects in more than 18 areas. Among them are risk management, anti-fraud and automation of document workflows, while large language models (neural networks for working with text) help analyze legal entity documents. A separate vector is AI agents in contact centers, which increase the efficiency of customer service.
The most promising areas for applied AI solutions were named as industry, medicine, financial technology and business process automation. It is in these segments of the Russian market that experts estimate the potential for private investment at more than 500 billion rubles.
At the same time, AI expenses are not limited to purchasing equipment. Companies that have implemented biometric identification in 25 schools in Tatarstan note that the technology speeds up students' passage through turnstiles, improves security and reduces costs through automation. However, without accounting for regular operating costs for cloud data processing, the economics of the project quickly turn negative.
Implementation in Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan
Banks are developing AI assistants for business: thousands of company executives already assign tasks ranging from analytics to application development to the GigaAgent AI agent from Sber. The success of the technology is directly linked to the company's readiness and the personal experience of top executives with AI.
In Belarus, the neural network is viewed as an analyst's assistant when studying foreign markets: AI noticeably speeds up research, but without proper configuration it misses details critical for exports, so the result requires verification. In Kazakhstan, neural networks are supported at the state level to save water, energy and pesticides in the agricultural sector, but the solutions are still expensive — large farms are the first to benefit, while small farmers risk falling behind.
Cryptalist analysis: The applied AI market in the region is entering a phase where the key factor is not the very fact of implementation, but the correct calculation of the total cost of ownership — from cloud capacity to model retraining. Investors should evaluate projects by the sustainability of their operating economics, not by the size of the stated potential. The most mature niches are fintech and industrial automation, while segments with a high cost of solutions (the agricultural sector) carry the risk of benefits concentrating among large players.
