Telecom giant Orange has officially joined the In-Factory Profile Provisioning (IFPP) program — an initiative developed by Acceleronix and IDEMIA Secure Transactions. This concerns a fundamentally new approach to manufacturing connected devices: carrier profiles are now installed on eSIMs directly on the assembly line, which allows a single hardware configuration to be used for supplies to any market in the world.
The Quantum Threat as a New Security Vector
The key feature of IFPP is quantum-resistant binding, which protects carrier credentials at the manufacturing stage. As the era of quantum computing approaches, classical cryptographic schemes are becoming vulnerable, and protecting eSIM profiles at the factory level is turning from a technical detail into a strategic priority. It is this aspect that makes the initiative particularly significant for the long-term security of IoT infrastructure.
As part of the partnership, Orange will provide its own carrier profiles and global IoT connectivity, while the partners will provide the technology platform and tools for factory configuration of devices. This model eliminates the need to customize hardware for each region and significantly simplifies supply chains for manufacturers of connected devices.
For the telecom and IoT market, this means a shift toward a more flexible and at the same time more secure deployment model. Manufacturers gain a universal hardware platform, carriers gain control over profiles at the release stage, and end users gain devices that are ready to connect out of the box.
Cryptalist Analysis: Orange's initiative reflects an emerging trend toward preventive protection against quantum threats in connected device infrastructure. The integration of quantum-resistant cryptography into eSIM manufacturing processes sets a new industry standard and creates a competitive advantage for carriers willing to invest in security at the stage preceding device activation. For the IoT market, this is a signal of a shift in focus from after-the-fact protection to architectural security by default.
