Shapira estimates the probability of such a scenario at 50%, arguing that the development of artificial intelligence will undermine fundamental notions about the security of the first cryptocurrency.
From my point of view, such fears often arise from a misunderstanding of bitcoin's architecture. Buterin's key argument here sounds extremely convincing: the probability of a practical breach of hash functions or undermining the Proof-of-Work mechanism remains vanishingly small even given progress in AI. The cryptographic algorithms underlying the network possess a huge margin of safety, and their mathematical complexity does not boil down to a simple computational race.
Vulnerabilities do not mean catastrophe
Buterin rightly notes that even if hypothetical attacks become a reality, bitcoin is capable of adapting. We are talking about issues that can be resolved through software updates without requiring consensus from the entire community to change the basic rules. This is an important distinction: the flexibility of the protocol at the implementation level gives the network the ability to respond to new threats without disruptive hard forks.
In the end, although AI is indeed transforming many industries, its impact on bitcoin's cryptographic security is greatly exaggerated. Investors should trust mathematics more than futuristic scenarios that do not account for technical reality.
My conclusion: Predictions of bitcoin's collapse due to AI are more of a speculative narrative than a technical analysis. The network remains one of the most resilient systems in the digital world, and its fundamental security does not depend on the speed of artificial intelligence development.
