AI as a "Silver Bullet": Tech Giants Mask Mass Layoffs as Automation

AI threatens humanity

The tech industry is experiencing a paradoxical trend: companies are increasingly citing the adoption of artificial intelligence to justify massive layoffs, even as their businesses grow. An analysis of the situation shows that in some cases, AI is indeed transforming workflows, but in others, it becomes a convenient cover for restructuring, cost optimization, and correcting aggressive hiring mistakes made during the pandemic period.

Scale of layoffs: alarming statistics

According to the TrueUp tracker, since the beginning of 2026, 389 rounds of layoffs have been recorded in the tech sector, affecting 151,998 people. The average pace of cuts stands at 916 people per day. Consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas adds that in May, U.S. employers announced 97,006 cuts, of which 38,242 were in the tech sector — the highest figure since August 2024.

Notably, AI has led as a reason for layoffs for the third consecutive month. Since the start of the year, employers have cited it in connection with 87,714 cuts, accounting for 22% of the total.

Cases: from Block to GitLab

Among the prominent examples is Block (formerly Square), which cut over 4,000 employees in February. Company head Jack Dorsey initially attributed this to the impact of AI tools but later admitted the real reason was excessive hiring during the pandemic.

Cloudflare laid off more than 1,100 people in May, citing a 600% increase in internal AI usage over three months. Meta Platforms planned to cut 10% of its workforce (about 8,000 people), linking this to a restructuring around AI. GitLab laid off 14% of its employees (350 people) while simultaneously developing its AI platform, Duo Agent.

The list also includes Oracle, which began laying off thousands of employees amid a stock decline, and Snap, which planned to cut 16% of its global team.

Expert opinion: AI as a "silver bullet"

Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen called AI a "silver bullet" for justifying layoffs. He emphasized that most cuts are not related to automation but to management errors and bloated headcount. This narrative amplifies social tension: companies are firing tens of thousands of people under the pretext of AI, while the AI market creates enormous fortunes for a select few.

It is telling that even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman accused large companies of using AI as a pretext for layoffs. Meanwhile, in China, a court in Hangzhou has already ruled that companies do not have the right to fire employees solely because they are being replaced by AI.

My comment as an analyst: The current situation is a classic case of "technological camouflage." Companies use AI as a universal excuse, but the reality is more complex: automation is indeed changing the labor market, but its impact is still greatly exaggerated. Investors should closely watch companies that are too aggressively "cleaning house" under the pretext of AI — this is often a signal of deep management problems, not a technological breakthrough.
