IREN makes a strategic breakthrough: the acquisition of Nostrum Group opens doors to Europe

Mining corporation IREN has completed the acquisition of Spanish data center developer for artificial intelligence, Ingenostrum, S.L., better known as Nostrum Group. This is not just an acquisition deal — it is a clear signal that major players see the future not only in cryptocurrency mining, but also in integration with high-performance computing (HPC) and AI infrastructure.
European foothold and 490 MW of guaranteed capacity
As a result of the deal, IREN gains access to the European market, along with approximately 490 MW of secured energy capacity in Spain. These are not hypothetical projects, but facilities already connected to the grid, which is critically important amid the global shortage of available electricity for data centers. Additionally, the portfolio includes a number of promising projects that will allow the company to scale further.
Nostrum team: 50 specialists under a new brand
An important aspect of the deal is the preservation of human capital. The entire Nostrum staff, comprising more than 50 highly qualified employees, will join IREN's structure and continue working under the mining giant's brand. This indicates that IREN values not only hardware and kilowatts, but also the expertise of a team that already knows how to build AI data centers.
My professional analysis: This is one of the smartest moves in the market recently. IREN is not just expanding its geography — it is diversifying its business model. While many miners are struggling to survive after the halving, IREN is betting on a "hybrid" approach: bitcoin mining plus leasing computing power for AI. Spain, with its surplus of renewable energy and favorable regulation, becomes an ideal platform for such a symbiosis. The purchase of Nostrum is not a step sideways, but a leap to a new level.
