IREN completes the acquisition of Nostrum Group: Entry into the European continent with 490 MW of capacity

Mining company IREN has officially closed the deal to acquire Nostrum Group, a Spanish developer of data centers for artificial intelligence with direct grid connection. This strategic acquisition marks IREN's first direct entry into the European market, providing access to a project portfolio with a total secured capacity of approximately 490 MW in Spain.
As part of the deal, IREN gains not only physical assets and energy contracts but also the Nostrum team, comprising over 50 highly qualified specialists. All personnel will join IREN's staff and continue working under the parent company's brand. This allows for the immediate integration of expertise in designing and operating AI infrastructure, which is critically important amid growing demand for computing power.
This move demonstrates a clear trend: major miners are no longer just cryptocurrency extractors. They are transforming into universal operators of energy-intensive infrastructure, capable of serving both blockchain networks and high-performance computing for AI. The European market, with its strict regulatory standards and limited access to cheap energy, has long been challenging for scaling. By leveraging Spanish capacity, IREN gains a strategic advantage, diversifying its geography and reducing dependence on a single region.
From my perspective, this acquisition is not just a purchase of assets but a bid for leadership in a new hybrid segment. IREN is clearly signaling to the market that it is ready to compete for contracts with cloud giants, using a unique combination of its own energy resources and AI infrastructure. The question remains: how quickly can the company monetize these 490 MW, and will it face local regulatory barriers in Spain? But the first step has been taken wisely.
