IREN enters Europe: acquisition of Nostrum Group and 490 MW of new capacity
A major player in the mining sector, IREN, has completed the strategic acquisition of Spanish AI data center developer Ingenostrum, S.L., known as Nostrum Group. This deal is not just another expansion, but a landmark move that opens up direct access to the European energy and technology market for the company.
Deal Details and New Capacity
As a result of the acquisition, IREN gains control over a portfolio of secured capacity in Spain totaling approximately 490 MW. This involves not only ready-made facilities but also prospective projects that now come under the miner's management. It is important to emphasize that these capacities already have grid connections, which, given the current electricity shortage for data centers, is a critical advantage.
Team and Integration
The key asset of the deal is human capital. Over 50 highly qualified specialists from Nostrum Group, possessing unique experience in designing and operating AI infrastructure, are joining IREN. They will continue their work under the buyer's brand, ensuring seamless technology integration and accelerating the deployment of new capacities.
My analysis: This move by IREN demonstrates a mature approach to diversification. Entering the European market through Spain is a logical step, given the high demand for AI computing resources and the country's relatively stable regulatory environment. The acquisition not only adds gigawatts but also provides a ready-made team and infrastructure, which is many times more efficient than organic construction. In the coming quarters, we will see how IREN begins converting these 490 MW into real hashrate and revenue from AI services, which could significantly revalue the company in the market.
