IREN acquires Nostrum Group: strategic entry into the European market with 490 MW capacity

Mining company IREN has completed the strategic acquisition of Spanish data center developer for artificial intelligence, Ingenostrum, S.L., known as Nostrum Group. This deal marks not just a portfolio expansion, but a full-fledged entry by IREN into the European market with immediate access to significant energy resources.

As a result of the acquisition, IREN gains approximately 490 MW of secured capacity located in Spain. These assets already have grid connections, which is critical given the shortage of available electricity for mining operations in Europe. Additionally, the company's portfolio includes a number of promising projects previously developed by Nostrum Group.

Importantly, the Nostrum team, comprising over 50 highly qualified specialists, will be fully integrated into IREN's structure and will continue its operations under the mining giant's brand. This is not merely a purchase of "hardware"—it is an acquisition of expertise and local experience, which is especially valuable for operating in the regulated European landscape.

Analytical Commentary

From my perspective, this move by IREN is a model of forward-thinking strategy. While many miners focus on haphazardly increasing hash rate in the US and Asia, IREN is betting on diversification and access to stable, "green" energy sources in Europe. 490 MW is not just a number; it is a foundation for scaling Bitcoin mining operations and, more importantly, for diversifying into the high-performance computing (HPC) and AI segment. This acquisition strengthens IREN's position as one of the most technologically and geographically balanced players in the market.
