IREN completes acquisition of Nostrum Group: strategic entry into the European market

Mining company IREN has officially completed the acquisition of Spanish AI data center developer Nostrum Group (legal entity Ingenostrum, S.L.). This acquisition marks a strategic breakthrough into the European market and a significant expansion of the miner's operational capabilities.
As a result of the deal, IREN gains access to approximately 490 MW of confirmed capacity in Spain, already connected to the power grid. This is not merely the addition of new sites—it is integration into a region with some of the cheapest and most renewable energy sources in Europe, which is critical for the profitability of mining and the operation of AI data centers.
In addition to ready-made capacity, IREN's portfolio also includes a number of promising Nostrum projects currently in the development stage. The Nostrum team, comprising over 50 highly qualified specialists, will be fully integrated into IREN's structure and will continue its operations under the parent company's brand.
Analytical commentary from Cryptalist: This is not just a purchase of capacity, but a well-thought-out geopolitical and energy maneuver. The Spanish market offers access to cheap solar and wind energy, giving IREN a significant competitive advantage over miners dependent on coal-fired generation. Furthermore, the acquisition of a team with experience in AI infrastructure is a direct hint at diversification: IREN is clearly preparing not only to mine cryptocurrency but also to serve the growing demand for computing power for artificial intelligence in Europe.
