The administration of Donald Trump has launched a large-scale program called "The Genesis Mission," which, as it turns out, directly affects the U.S. nuclear weapons complex. The Department of Energy, responsible for its implementation, has published a list of 26 priority tasks, and at least seven of them are related to nuclear deterrence, weapons production, and non-proliferation.

The Essence of "The Genesis Mission"

An executive order signed by Trump on November 24, 2025, mandates the creation of an "American Science and Security Platform" — an infrastructure that combines supercomputers from national laboratories, secure cloud environments for AI, scientific datasets, and specialized models. The goal is to accelerate scientific discoveries, strengthen national security, and ensure "energy dominance." The project is led by Deputy Secretary for Science Dario Gil. The timeline is tight: within 60 days — identify at least 20 scientific and technological tasks; within 90 — inventory computing resources; within 120 — initial datasets; within 270 — demonstrate platform functionality for at least one task.

Nuclear Block: Seven Areas

On February 12, the Department of Energy published the final list of 26 tasks. Among them is a block that draws the most interest from analysts. Here are the key areas:

  1. Nuclear Threat Assessment and Response: Creating a multimodal AI system that integrates data from sensors, simulations, and intelligence. The goal is to reduce the time from threat detection to response from days to hours.
  2. Digitization of Historical Nuclear Data: Converting classified archives of nuclear tests and experiments spanning over 80 years into digital datasets using text recognition, computer vision, and 3D reconstruction.
  3. Increasing Throughput of Research Nuclear Facilities: Implementing an AI-based "facility operating system" for planning experiments, adjusting them in real-time, and integrating diagnostic data with simulations.
  4. Integration of Design and Production for Nuclear Deterrence: Reducing the cycle between design and production units to deliver new weapons systems "in a fraction of the traditional time and cost."
  5. Non-Proliferation: Using multimodal models and analytical agents for joint analysis of satellite imagery, sensor data, and open sources to identify anomalies related to the potential spread of nuclear materials.
  6. Optimization of High-Hazard Facility Operations: Automating the analysis of safety requirements, documentation preparation, and work planning using AI based on large language models. The goal is to reduce planning time by more than 50%.
  7. Nuclear Forensics: Applying multimodal AI for accelerated analysis of samples and debris, determining their origin, and reconstructing the material's history after an incident.

A separate task is highlighted for accelerating the development of materials for strategic deterrence, including finding new methods for plutonium purification using AI agents.

AI Does Not Get the "Button," but Risks Are Obvious

It is important to emphasize: none of the published documents contain instructions to transfer the decision-making authority for using nuclear weapons to AI. As experts, including Herbert Lin, a senior research scholar at the Stanford Center for International Security and Cooperation, note, no one in the military or the National Security Council is proposing autonomous launch. A Pentagon representative also confirmed that the decision remains with humans.

However, concerns arise from the widespread integration of AI into threat analysis, production, and planning. Lin warns that AI should not be perceived as a source of guaranteed truth, especially when assessing real attacks. Bahrad Soohsanj, a researcher at the Institute for Law and AI, adds that accelerating science could affect not only beneficial but also potentially dangerous areas, including biological and defense research.

My Comment: "The Genesis Mission" is not just another AI initiative. It is an attempt to transform the U.S. nuclear complex into a highly automated, digital ecosystem. The market should closely monitor how AI is integrated into critical defense processes — from production to threat assessment. Any error in algorithms could have catastrophic consequences, and control mechanisms remain vague for now. Investors should consider that stocks of companies tied to defense AI contracts (Nvidia, Microsoft, AWS) may receive an additional boost, but regulatory risks in this area will only increase.
