Altcoin Selection Strategy: How to Catch Assets Outperforming Bitcoin
The altcoin market is a field of constant leadership rotation. Only Bitcoin and Ethereum have consistently held the top spots in the rankings over the past ten years. All other assets below the top two are constantly changing, and this fundamental conclusion is the basis of an effective strategy for working with altcoins. Long-term holding here is a path to losses, not profits.
Why passive holding loses to trend following
The key thesis, which I have repeatedly confirmed in practice: a coin that is in the top 10 today could be at the bottom tomorrow. A passive holder risks being left with a devalued asset. Instead, it is necessary to follow the strength of the trend. A bullish view on a coin is justified only as long as it trades above key moving averages — the six-month or twelve-month one. This is a signal that the upward momentum is maintained and buyer interest is not waning.
As soon as the price falls below these levels, it is time to decisively reduce the position. This mechanical approach removes emotions and attachment to a specific asset from decisions, forcing one to follow the actual price dynamics. This is not just theory — it is a strict risk management system.
Double filter: catalysts and risk
The selection of altcoins is based on two simultaneous criteria. The first is the search for powerful individual catalysts: events or factors capable of moving a specific asset independently of the overall market. The second is passing a basic risk management system. A coin must not only have a catalyst but also satisfy parameters that limit potential losses. Only the combination of both conditions has historically yielded noticeable returns compared to Bitcoin.
What such a catalyst looks like in practice can be seen from recent assessments. One of the strongest networks was named BNB, which is associated with Grayscale's application for a BNB ETF, the addition of the coin to Coinbase's institutional roadmap, and the development of tokenized stocks on the BNB Chain. It is this set of specific drivers that distinguishes candidates for outperforming growth from the bulk of altcoins, most of which will never enter the top ten by market capitalization.
My professional opinion: The strategy of trend following with strict entry and exit rules is the only reasonable approach to altcoins. The market is too volatile and unpredictable to rely on "buy and hold." An investor who is not ready to actively manage positions and timely cut losses is doomed to lose capital in the long term.
