HPE combines Cray supercomputers with quantum technologies: a new stage of hybrid computing
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is taking a decisive step toward the practical implementation of hybrid computing architectures. I have been closely following this process, and I can confidently say: the announced expansion of partnerships with leading players in the quantum industry is not just another PR stunt, but a strategic maneuver that could fundamentally change the landscape of high-performance computing (HPC).
As part of the new initiative, HPE plans to integrate its flagship supercomputing platform HPE Cray with quantum processors from Intel, IQM, Rigetti, and QuEra Computing. A key aspect is the simultaneous integration of control systems from Qblox and Quantum Machines, as well as error correction solutions from Riverlane and Quantinuum. This is an important point: without effective quantum noise suppression and logical correction, any hybrid systems will remain mere laboratory experiments.
Practical Validation of Hybrid Algorithms
The partners plan to create specialized testbeds. Their task is the joint development and debugging of algorithms, verification of software compatibility, and assessment of the real-world performance of "quantum + classical" hybrid systems. I see this as a sign of market maturity: the industry is moving from theoretical discussions about "quantum supremacy" to creating engineering solutions capable of solving specific business problems—from cryptography to portfolio optimization and modeling complex molecules.
The choice of partners deserves special attention. Intel with its spin qubits, Rigetti with its superconducting architecture, and QuEra with neutral atoms—HPE is clearly diversifying risks by not focusing on a single technology. This is a sensible approach, given that there is still no consensus on which quantum carrier will become dominant. In my opinion, it is hybrid systems, where a classical supercomputer acts as an "orchestrator" for a quantum accelerator, that will become the main driver of market growth over the next 3–5 years.
My expert commentary: Integrating Cray with quantum processors is not just a hardware upgrade. It is the creation of a fundamentally new computing paradigm, where quantum modules take on tasks that are impossible for classical machines. For the crypto industry, this means that algorithms based on factorization and discrete logarithms (including vulnerabilities for RSA and ECDSA) may face a real threat sooner than many expect. Investors and blockchain protocol developers should already be thinking about post-quantum cryptography.
