Snap Inc. has officially unveiled SPECS — a standalone portable computer in the form factor of augmented reality glasses. The device is already available for pre-order at a price of $2,195, with shipments to the US, UK, and France starting in the fall of this year.

The key feature of SPECS is its complete autonomy. The glasses do not require a connection to a smartphone or external modules and run on their own operating system, Snap OS. The device's weight ranges from 132 to 136 grams, and the body is made of high-strength TR90 polymer.

Technical Specifications

The device is equipped with two Snapdragon processors, providing a 51-degree field of view and minimal signal latency — just 7 milliseconds. The battery guarantees up to 4 hours of continuous operation; with the charging case, this figure increases to 20 hours. The lenses feature electrochromic coating that automatically adjusts the tint level depending on lighting conditions within 10 seconds.

The Snap OS interface supports gesture and voice control. Users have access to navigation functions, work tools, and educational applications. Developers have received an updated Lens Studio for creating AR effects, and AI assistants capable of analyzing the surrounding environment in real time are integrated into the system.

Privacy and Security

Snap has paid special attention to data protection. All glasses are equipped with an LED indicator that activates during video recording. A key point is that most data is processed directly on the device without being sent to cloud servers. Users can independently manage their sync history and delete recordings.

My analysis: Snap has made a breakthrough by moving away from smartphone dependency. SPECS is not just a gadget, but a full-fledged computing module with its own OS.
