Grok Imagine Video 1.5 from xAI: A New Level of AI Video Generation

xAI has officially released its new video generation model, Grok Imagine Video 1.5, from early access. The tool, now available via API and web interface, is an image-to-video generator focused on realism, motion physics, and processing speed.

What has changed?

The new model is available under the identifier grok-imagine-video-1.5 in the Imagine API. Alongside this, xAI has launched an accelerated version — Video 1.5 Fast, which is already operational on the grok.com/imagine platform and in mobile apps for iOS and Android.

The key improvement is generation speed. While the previous version required over 40 seconds to create a 6-second clip at 720p resolution, the new Fast version completes the task in approximately 25 seconds. This is nearly a twofold acceleration, which is critical for workflows where time is a resource.

Quality and functionality

In addition to speed, xAI has significantly enhanced content quality. Now, sound accompaniment, background atmosphere, and character lines are generated in a single pass, perfectly synchronizing with the on-screen action. Speech has become clearer, and object movement remains stable throughout the clip. There are fewer deformations, and weight and inertia are more believable.

Through the API, developers can set a starting image, a text description of the motion, resolution, and duration. The interface now includes a side panel with projects, the ability to run multiple generations in parallel, and convenient search through a personal material library.

Community reaction

Early users who tested the model for several weeks generally gave positive feedback, calling the team's work high-quality. However, there was some criticism. Attentive viewers noticed an unfortunate typo in the product name in promotional material. Among the main requests are adding voice references to create characters with consistent sound, as well as opening full versions of Video 1.5 and Imagine Pro not only via API but also in the app and on the website. There were also separate complaints about abrupt interface changes and stricter content moderation for adult users.

My analysis: xAI is betting on speed and realism, which is logical given the intense competition with Sora from OpenAI and other generators. A 2x speed boost is a strong argument for developers, but the lack of voice references and limited access to full versions could slow mass adoption. For now, this is a tool for enthusiasts and early adopters, not a mass-market product.
