Snap Inc. has officially unveiled SPECS, a full-fledged wearable computer in the form of augmented reality (AR) glasses. The device is already available for pre-order at a price of $2195. This is a direct response to competitors in the smart glasses segment, including Meta's products.

The key difference of SPECS is its complete autonomy. The device does not require a connection to a smartphone or an external computing unit. The weight of the structure ranges from 132 to 136 grams, and the body is made of lightweight and durable TR90 polymer. The technical specifications are impressive: the field of view is 51 degrees, and the signal latency is only 7 milliseconds. Performance is handled by two Snapdragon processors.

SPECS' battery life reaches up to 4 hours of continuous use on a single charge. With the charging case, this figure increases to 20 hours. The lenses are equipped with an electrochromic coating that automatically adjusts the tint level depending on the lighting — the full cycle takes 10 seconds.

The device runs on its own operating system, Snap OS. The interface supports gesture and voice control. Out of the box, users have access to navigation services, productivity tools, and educational applications. Developers have received an updated version of Lens Studio for creating AR effects. The system includes AI assistants capable of analyzing the surrounding environment in real time.

Snap has paid special attention to privacy. The glasses are equipped with an LED recording indicator. Most data is processed locally, without being sent to the cloud. Users can manually manage their sync history and delete recordings.

Deliveries of SPECS to the US, UK, and France will begin this fall.

Cryptalist Analysis: Snap has bet on full autonomy and data protection — this is a strong move against the backdrop of recent scandals surrounding facial recognition among competitors. However, the $2195 price tag places SPECS in the premium gadget niche rather than a mass-market product. Success will depend on how much the Snap OS ecosystem and AR applications are in demand among users beyond a narrow circle of enthusiasts.
