HIVE Digital Technologies, a company known for its positions in cryptocurrency mining, is making a decisive move towards high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence. A three-year contract worth $220 million has been signed, providing for the deployment of GPU infrastructure for sovereign AI projects in Canada.

According to the terms of the deal, the BUZZ High Performance Computing division will install 2304 Nvidia Grace Blackwell accelerators at a site in Merritt, British Columbia. This equipment will be used for training and inference of enterprise AI models developed by the Canadian company Cohere. The key focus is on solutions aimed at government agencies and businesses.

Strategic Shift: From Mining to AI

The project demonstrates how traditional mining companies are adapting to new market realities. Infrastructure originally intended for digital asset mining is being repurposed for more profitable and stable contracts in the AI sector. The launch of the facilities is scheduled for late 2026 to early 2027, indicating the long-term nature of the investment.

My view on the situation: This contract is not just a deal, but a signal to the market. HIVE Digital confirms that the integration of blockchain infrastructure with AI computing is becoming a key trend. For investors, this means diversification of the company's revenue and reduced dependence on cryptocurrency volatility. However, implementing such a large-scale project will require high operational discipline from HIVE, especially given the competition for access to Nvidia's latest generation chips.
