A large transfer from Bhutan's government wallets has drawn analysts' attention. Addresses linked to the government of this Himalayan country sent 533 bitcoins to Binance — approximately $34.5 million at the current exchange rate. After this transaction, about 1,750 BTC remained in controlled structures.

The formation of Bhutan's bitcoin reserve is a unique case for the global economy. Unlike most states that accumulate cryptocurrency through confiscations or direct purchases, the Kingdom of Bhutan mines BTC using its own mining facilities. The key advantage is surplus hydroelectric power, which allows the country to conduct mining with minimal operational costs.

Currently, the government continues to fund at least four mining sites. However, in recent months, the inflow of new coins into the national fund has completely stopped. This may indicate that the equipment has either been mothballed or redirected to other tasks — for example, maintaining the existing pool or reallocating hashrate.

The current sale of 533 BTC is not an isolated case. We have previously observed a gradual liquidation of part of the state reserves, which may indicate a need for liquidity to finance domestic projects or cover budget expenses. Given that Bhutan is a small economy with limited access to international financial markets, cryptocurrency reserves become a flexible liquidity management tool for it.

Analytical assessment: Selling bitcoins to an exchange rather than through OTC channels indicates the government's desire to obtain immediate liquidity rather than maximize price. This could be a signal of an urgent need for fiat funds. However, the remaining 1,750 BTC represent a substantial reserve, valued at over $110 million at current prices. Bhutan remains one of the few states that not only holds bitcoin but actively mines it, making its position strategically important for understanding long-term trends in institutional accumulation of the first cryptocurrency.
