Beryl Upgrade on Base: New B20 Standard and Accelerated Withdrawals to Ethereum
The second-layer network Base is preparing to implement a significant Beryl upgrade, with mainnet activation scheduled for June 25. The testnet is already operational, indicating the completion of the internal testing phase and proximity to deployment on the main platform.
A key element of the upgrade will be the introduction of the B20 standard. Unlike traditional smart contracts, its logic is integrated directly into the node software code. This architectural solution allows for the creation of tokens with higher processing speeds and reduced fees. Importantly, B20 is fully compatible with the ERC-20 format, ensuring support for new assets by existing wallets and exchanges without additional modifications. At the initial stage, developers will have access to two templates: one for stablecoins and one for standard assets.
The prospects of the B20 standard are impressive: in the future, it will allow fees to be paid directly in the tokens themselves, bypassing the need to use ETH, and will also double the network's throughput. This will significantly enhance convenience for users and developers.
The update will also optimize the process of withdrawing assets from Base to Ethereum. Instead of the current seven days, the procedure will be reduced to five. This breakthrough was made possible by transitioning to the Multiproofs proof system, which increases the efficiency of cross-network transactions. The technical component of the upgrade includes the implementation of Reth V2, which reduces the load on node disk space and accelerates block processing.
The next major Cobalt upgrade is scheduled for September. It is expected to implement native account abstraction, opening new horizons for the user experience.
