In the second phase of the Project Fetch experiment, Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.7 model demonstrated the ability to independently configure and control a four-legged robot, completing tasks 20 times faster than teams of human engineers. This is not just another benchmark — it is a signal that AI is beginning to move beyond purely digital operations.

Autonomous operation without human support

In August 2024, Anthropic employees with no robotics experience attempted to program a robot dog using AI. At that time, the neural network only acted as an assistant. Today, the situation has changed dramatically. Claude Opus 4.7 worked almost autonomously under minimal researcher supervision. The model independently:

  • connected to video sensors and LiDAR;
  • wrote a program for manual control;
  • created a robot path monitoring system;
  • configured an object recognition algorithm.

The results are impressive: Opus 4.7 was 18 times faster than a team using older AI versions and 37 times faster than humans working without a chatbot. Moreover, the neural network wrote more efficient code — its volume turned out to be 10 times smaller than that of human teams. This indicates that AI not only accelerates processes but also optimizes them at a fundamentally new level.

Side effect of scaling

Notably, Anthropic did not introduce specialized algorithms for controlling the hardware. The progress in robotics became a side effect of the general scaling of language models. This confirms the thesis that universal AI systems can adapt to physical tasks without additional training.

However, there were limitations. Claude still struggles with precise physical actions. The model managed to guide the robot to the target but failed to gently push a ball to the exact spot. This requires complex real-time feedback, where humans still outperform AI.

Era of physical AI agents

Anthropic believes the industry is entering the era of "physical AI agents." In the future, neural networks will be able to use standard tools and equipment as effectively as they currently work with software code. It is worth noting that on June 13, the company suspended access to the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models due to a directive from the U.S. government under export controls, highlighting the strategic importance of these developments.

My expert opinion: Claude Opus 4.7's achievement is not just a technological curiosity but a harbinger of a new paradigm. When AI begins to control physical objects faster and more efficiently than humans, we stand on the threshold of automating not only intellectual but also physical labor. However, the problem with precise manipulations reminds us that fully replacing humans in the real world remains a future challenge. Investors should pay attention to companies integrating language models into robotics — this could become the next big trend after generative AI.
