Chinese universities are massively scaling back humanities programs in favor of AI and robotics.
China's higher education system is undergoing a tectonic shift. The country's leading universities are suspending enrollment in dozens of humanities and language programs while simultaneously opening new fields in artificial intelligence, robotics, and related digital technologies. This is not just a trend—it is a strategic response to labor market demands, where traditional professions are rapidly losing relevance.
Reform by the Numbers: Over 500 Programs on Hold
According to an analytical review by MyCOS, covering 70 universities, enrollment has been suspended for 525 bachelor's programs. It is important to note that the statistics are incomplete—some universities did not disclose data, suggesting that the actual scale of adjustments is even larger.
Marketing leads the number of suspensions, being discontinued at 16 universities. It is followed by public administration (11 programs), logistics (10), and Internet of Things engineering (9). Language fields have also been affected: eight programs in Japanese, five in German, and another five in translation studies. This is a direct consequence of the development of neural network translators and the automation of business processes.
New Direction: "Embodied Intelligence" and 10,200 New Slots
Alongside the cuts, there is an active expansion of the technological front. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, universities opened 10,200 new bachelor's enrollment slots while canceling or suspending 12,200. As experts from Tencent News note, this marks a shift from extensive expansion to optimizing the structure of programs.
Of particular note is the field of "embodied intelligence"—what China calls physical AI technologies: autonomous machines, humanoid robots, and systems that combine hardware with algorithms. In April, the Ministry of Education allowed nine universities to enroll students in this specialty. In total, the ministry approved 38 new fields for the next academic year.
Not Just Humanities: Engineers Also Under the Knife
It is important to emphasize that the adjustments have not only affected humanities disciplines. Among engineering fields, 32 computer science programs, 23 mechanical engineering programs, and 22 electronics and information technology programs have been suspended. This indicates that Chinese universities are not simply "cutting" the old but are purposefully restructuring curricula by embedding digital and "intelligent" components.
Suspending enrollment does not mean permanent cancellation. According to Tencent News, universities may temporarily halt admissions due to curriculum reforms, resource reallocation, or consolidated enrollment, and then reintroduce the program in an updated—digital, "intelligent," or interdisciplinary—form.
This process is part of the large-scale AI+ Education plan, which envisions integrating AI at all stages of learning—from primary school to lifelong professional training. China is betting on technological sovereignty, and universities are becoming the first front in this battle.
