Crypto-PACs dominate primaries: over $8 million poured into US election races

USA США

Political committees funded by the crypto industry have disclosed massive expenditures exceeding $8 million, aimed at media support for candidates ahead of the June 23 primaries in key states: New York, Maryland, and Utah. This move demonstrates the growing influence of the blockchain sector on the U.S. political landscape.

The central player was the Protect Progress committee, affiliated with the super-PAC Fairshake. According to my data, it provided the lion's share of the funding. Protect Progress allocated over $5.5 million to support Adrian Boafo in Maryland's 5th congressional district, as well as more than $1.4 million for Ritchie Torres's campaign in New York's 15th district. These infusions aim to strengthen the positions of candidates who advocate for innovation and digital assets.

However, such aggressive support has not escaped criticism. Boafo's opponents publicly called on him to reject external funding, labeling these expenditures as "handouts from crypto billionaires" and other special interests. This underscores the tension surrounding the integration of cryptocurrencies into traditional political processes.

Expert commentary: The $8 million in spending on the primaries is just the tip of the iceberg. I expect that by the 2024 elections, the total investment from crypto-PACs will reach tens of millions, making the industry one of the key sponsors of political campaigns in the U.S. This signals the sector's maturity: it is not only protecting its interests but also actively shaping the legislative agenda.
