Altcoin Season: Glassnode indicator shows 86, but the signal is alarming

The Glassnode Altcoin Cycle Signal has once again entered the "altcoin season" zone, reaching a level of 86. However, unlike classic scenarios where this signal is accompanied by confident growth in alternative coins against a stable Bitcoin, the current situation is far from ideal. The main reason for the indicator's activation is not an organic inflow of capital into altcoins, but a sharp 18% drop in Bitcoin over the past month.

BTC Weakness as a Driver for Altcoins

Typically, exceeding the 50 level on the Altcoin Cycle Signal scale means that altcoins begin to outperform Bitcoin in terms of dynamics. Currently, the indicator is at 86, which formally points to the peak of an "altseason." However, as analysts note, sellers have almost ceased active actions after two years of intense pressure, but Bitcoin continues to decline. The BTC correction began amid the hawkish stance of the US Federal Reserve and market fears over maintaining or even raising interest rates. Bank of America, for example, forecasts three rate hikes this year, which traditionally hits risk assets, including cryptocurrencies.

"Right now, Bitcoin is still doing the heavy lifting," Glassnode experts emphasize.

Mixed Forecasts and a Paradigm Shift

Not all market participants share the pessimistic scenario. Grayscale's Head of Research, Zach Pandl, believes that the company's base case assumes the Fed will refrain from further hikes. In this scenario, easing concerns over policy tightening could support Bitcoin and other digital assets. Moreover, Grayscale notes that BTC and gold have shown weaker results compared to stocks since the start of the Iran conflict, but if the likelihood of rate hikes decreases, Bitcoin could catch up.

However, even in the event of a BTC recovery, analysts warn: the era of classic altcoin rallies, where all assets rise simultaneously, is coming to an end. Bitwise's Chief Investment Officer, Matt Hougan, states that we are facing an unconventional altcoin season. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju adds that "a new story is no longer enough" for altcoins—only projects with real revenue and a working business model will survive.

My analysis: The current Glassnode signal is more of a "false breakout" of the classic altseason. The market is transitioning to a new phase where capital will concentrate on fundamentally strong projects, rather than speculative growth across the board. Investors should be extremely selective and not succumb to euphoria over high indicator numbers.
