Altcoin Season: Glassnode indicator is off the charts, but it's too early to celebrate — the signal is extremely contradictory
The cryptocurrency market has once again taken center stage: a key indicator, the Altcoin Cycle Signal from the analytical platform Glassnode, has confidently entered the so-called "altcoin season" zone. However, as my analysis shows, the current situation is far from a classic bullish scenario. The main driver of this signal is not organic growth of alternative coins, but a sharp decline in Bitcoin (BTC).
Typically, activation of this indicator means that altcoins begin to outpace the first cryptocurrency in terms of growth rates, drawing liquidity toward themselves. Now, however, we are seeing a different picture: the index has surged to 86, which formally confirms the "season." But, according to my data, this is more a consequence of BTC's weakening, which has lost 18% of its value over the past month amid the hawkish rhetoric of the U.S. Federal Reserve System and expectations of a new round of interest rate hikes.
Bitcoin's Weakness as a Catalyst
Glassnode analysts directly point out that sellers in the altcoin market have nearly exhausted their potential after a two-year period of pressure. However, Bitcoin continues to decline, and it is this fact that creates the illusion of altcoin strength. In reality, "Bitcoin is still doing the heavy lifting," and its recovery will be the decisive test. If BTC begins to regain ground and altcoins continue to rise, this will be true confirmation of the trend. If not, the current signal will prove false.
The macroeconomic backdrop remains ambiguous. Bank of America's forecasts suggest three Fed rate hikes this year, which traditionally weighs on risk assets. However, there is also an alternative viewpoint. Grayscale's Head of Research, Zach Pandl, believes the regulator may refrain from tightening policy. In that case, easing concerns could not only support Bitcoin but also give new momentum to altcoins, especially against the backdrop of positive dynamics in global stock markets.
A New Era: Classic Rallies Are a Thing of the Past
It is important to understand that even if the signal is confirmed, the market has changed. Bitwise's Chief Investment Officer, Matt Hougan, is confident that the era of indiscriminate growth across all altcoins at once is over. We are heading toward an unconventional "altcoin season," where only projects with real revenue and a working business model will survive. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju echoes this, noting that a "new narrative" for coins is no longer enough—investors demand fundamental metrics.
My conclusion: The Glassnode indicator is a powerful tool, but in this context, it is sending the market a signal of alarm, not euphoria. A true altcoin season will only begin when Bitcoin stabilizes and reclaims its role as a leader, rather than serving as a backdrop for the relative strength of less capitalized assets. Until then, any hint of a "season" should be viewed with a great deal of skepticism.
