Meta introduces advertising fees: response to digital services taxes

Meta Facebook

Starting July 1, 2024, Meta Corporation will begin charging additional fees to advertising accounts whose ads target users in certain jurisdictions. This move is a direct response to the introduction of digital services taxes and other local mandatory payments, which the company is passing on to advertisers.

Details of the New Mechanism

The fee rate will be determined solely by the location of the target audience, not the country of the advertiser's business registration. For Austria and Turkey, it will be 5%; for France, Italy, and Spain — 3%; for the United Kingdom — 2%. Meta emphasizes that the list of countries and fee amounts may be adjusted in the future depending on changes in tax legislation.

Analytical Perspective

This decision by Meta is a symptomatic signal for the entire digital economy. Major platforms are increasingly shifting the fiscal burden onto their clients, which in the long term could lead to higher advertising costs and, consequently, more expensive goods and services for end consumers. Amid the global tightening of tax regulation, the crypto industry should expect similar precedents — for example, from major exchanges or DeFi protocols, which may also begin charging fees tied to tax obligations in specific jurisdictions.
