Cboe launches binary options on the Mini S&P 500: a new tool for prediction markets
Exchange giant Cboe Global Markets has officially launched its new product line Cboe Predicts, designed for prediction markets. The first instrument in this series is binary options on the S&P 500 mini-index (XSP). This is a landmark move that could fundamentally change the landscape of traditional derivatives.
Mechanics and Accessibility
Currently, trading in the new contracts (tickers XSPBW and XSPBX) is available through broker Interactive Brokers. In the coming months, Cboe plans to onboard Charles Schwab, followed by other major retail brokers. The instrument's mechanics are extremely simple: an investor chooses "yes" if they expect the index to close at or above a set level, or "no" if they predict a close below a fixed mark. If the prediction is correct, the participant receives a fixed payout of $100.
Clearing operations are handled by the Options Clearing Corporation (OCC), adding an institutional level of reliability to these contracts. Essentially, Cboe is transferring the infrastructure and liquidity of its SPX options market into a new, more accessible plane for retail traders.
Strategic Context
The launch of Cboe Predicts is not just an expansion of the product line. It is a direct response to the explosive growth of prediction markets, previously pioneered by Polymarket and Kalshi. Cboe's management directly links the emergence of this product to the high demand for zero-days-to-expiry (0DTE) options, emphasizing that their goal is to set new standards of transparency and investor protection in this niche.
In the future, the exchange plans to add vertical spreads on XSP through its own Quoted Spread Book platform. This makes Cboe yet another major player consciously entering a market that was recently considered experimental.
Expert opinion: The emergence of such instruments from Cboe is a powerful signal of the prediction market's maturity. Traditional exchanges are legitimizing a format previously associated mainly with cryptocurrency platforms. For the crypto community, this means competition for liquidity and retail investor attention will only intensify, and DeFi projects will have to prove their advantage in speed and innovation.
