The Pentagon is investing up to $200 million in quantum sensors for intelligence: launch of the Farseer program

The U.S. Department of Defense, through the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), is launching a large-scale program called Farseer, aimed at developing quantum sensors and portable atomic clocks for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance needs. Funding for the initiative over the next year could reach $200 million.

The program is a direct result of a presidential directive from June 22, 2026, which mandates the accelerated commercialization of quantum technologies—computing, sensors, and networks—as well as a revision of the national quantum strategy. Military agencies have clearly realized that classical sensor systems and synchronization methods have reached their limits: they force a compromise between sensitivity, size, weight, and power consumption. Quantum solutions are expected to radically reduce these limitations, ensuring the resilience of intelligence systems under intense electronic warfare conditions.

Four Technological Fronts

The Farseer program covers four key areas, each of critical importance for military logistics and data collection:

  • Quantum Magnetometers — for detecting magnetic signals with frequencies above 100 Hz, enabling the identification of submarines, unmaintained mines, and other hidden objects.
  • Gravimeters and Gradiometers — absolute and single-axis systems for stationary, maritime, and airborne platforms, capable of mapping underground structures and voids.
  • Portable Atomic Clocks — for positioning, navigation, and synchronization in environments where global satellite systems (GPS) are unavailable or jammed.
  • Component Technologies — chip lasers, micro-optics, photonic integrated circuits, cryogenic systems, and vapor cells necessary for miniaturizing and reducing the cost of devices.

Special attention is given to Rydberg sensors — quantum detectors of electric fields. They are currently classified as less mature technologies, but their potential for intelligence tasks is considered high.

Participant Conditions and Funding Mechanism

Both U.S. and foreign companies are invited to participate. The minimum Technology Readiness Level (TRL) is 4, meaning the solution must have been validated in a laboratory environment. A prototype must be prepared for initial testing at a U.S. government facility within 3–9 months after contract award. The total project duration should not exceed 24 months.

Contracts will be awarded under the "other transactions" mechanism pursuant to Section 4022 of Title 10 of the U.S. Code. This tool allows for significantly accelerated prototyping. Upon successful project completion, the agreement may be converted into a production contract without a new competition—a powerful incentive for participants.

Unlike quantum computers, which remain largely in laboratories, sensors are already ready for deployment in real-world military and civilian systems.
