Quantum Sensors for the Pentagon: $200 Million for Ultra-Precise Intelligence

The U.S. Department of Defense is launching a large-scale program called Farseer, aimed at developing quantum sensors and portable atomic clocks for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance needs. The initiative, launched under the auspices of the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), could receive funding of up to $200 million over the next year.

The program is a logical continuation of the presidential directive signed by Donald Trump on June 22, 2026. The document mandates accelerating the commercialization of quantum computing, sensors, and networks, as well as updating the national quantum strategy. The department emphasizes that classical sensors and synchronization systems often require a trade-off between sensitivity, size, weight, and power consumption. Quantum solutions are designed to remove these limitations and enhance the resilience of intelligence systems in conditions of electronic warfare and electromagnetic countermeasures.

Four Key Areas

The program covers four technology tracks:

  • Quantum Magnetometers — for detecting magnetic signals above 100 Hz;
  • Gravimeters — including absolute gravimeters and single-axis gradiometers for stationary, maritime, and airborne platforms;
  • Portable Atomic Clocks — for positioning, navigation, timing, secure communications, and sensor networks;
  • Component Technologies — chip-scale lasers, micro-optics, photonic integrated circuits, cryogenics, and vapor cells.

Rydberg sensors — quantum electric field sensors — are mentioned separately. They are currently classified as less mature but potentially promising technologies for intelligence purposes.

Both U.S. and foreign companies are eligible to participate. The minimum technology readiness level for solutions is 4. A prototype must be ready for initial testing at a U.S. government facility within three to nine months after contract award. The maximum project duration is 24 months.

Contracts are planned to be awarded under the mechanism of other transactions pursuant to Section 4022 of Title 10 of the U.S. Code. This allows for accelerated prototyping. Upon successful completion, the project may transition to a production contract without a new competition.
