IBM has announced a breakthrough in chip manufacturing: the 0.7 nm technology is changing the game.

A major step in the semiconductor industry: IBM has unveiled a chip manufacturing technology with a transistor architecture of just 0.7 nm, equivalent to 7 angstroms. This is a significant achievement that takes microelectronics to a fundamentally new level.

The technology is based on the so-called nanostack—an innovative method of placing transistors not in a traditional flat configuration, but in several vertical layers. This approach radically increases packing density and the efficiency of chip area utilization.

According to IBM estimates, this architecture will allow placing nearly 100 billion transistors on a chip the size of a fingernail. For comparison, this is more than double the density of modern 2-nm solutions introduced by the company in 2021.

Performance and energy efficiency at a new level

The transition to a 0.7-nm process promises impressive metrics: up to 50% performance gains or up to 70% reduction in power consumption compared to the previous generation. This opens the way to creating ultra-powerful yet energy-efficient processors for servers, AI systems, and mobile devices.

Commercial production of chips using the new technology is expected within the next five years. However, it is worth noting that implementing such advanced processes requires significant investment in equipment and adaptation of production lines.

Expert opinion: This announcement is not just another step in the nanometer race, but a paradigm shift. The transition to vertical transistor stacking could be a key factor in overcoming the physical limitations of traditional lithography. For the crypto industry, this means a potential acceleration of mining ASIC chips and an increase in their energy efficiency, which is critical amid growing computational complexity.
