IBM unveils 0.7nm technology: a breakthrough in transistor architecture

IBM Corporation has announced a new chip manufacturing technology based on a transistor architecture with a size of 0.7 nm, equivalent to 7 angstroms. This represents a significant step forward compared to previous achievements, including the 2nm process introduced in 2021.

The key innovation in this development is the so-called "nanostack" — a technology in which transistors are arranged not in a single plane but in multiple layers. This approach allows for a significant increase in the density of elements on the chip. According to IBM estimates, nearly 100 billion transistors could be placed on a chip the size of a fingernail.

Compared to 2nm technology, the new architecture promises either a performance increase of up to 50% or a reduction in power consumption of up to 70%, depending on the developer's priorities. This makes the technology particularly promising for high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and mobile devices.

IBM predicts that commercial production of chips using this technology could begin within five years. However, it is important to note that the transition from laboratory samples to mass production always involves technological and economic challenges.
