Wanted for a mining empire using stolen electricity: Thailand issues arrest warrant for Chinese businessman

Thailand's Department of Special Investigations has officially authorized the arrest of Chinese entrepreneur Wang Yicheng. The reason is the organization of a large-scale illegal cryptocurrency mining network that operated by stealing electricity.

According to the investigation, the damage from illegal resource consumption exceeds $28 million. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. It has been established that the mining operation served as a tool for laundering proceeds from online fraud and illegal gambling.

In November of this year, Wang Yicheng was already formally charged with theft of state resources and violation of the Computer Crimes Act. Law enforcement now believes the suspect has left Thailand, significantly complicating the extradition process.

Expert Analysis

This case is a striking example of the transformation of the cryptocurrency underground. Previously, mining was perceived as a relatively "clean" way to earn money, but today it is increasingly becoming part of complex financial schemes. By stealing electricity and mixing funds from scams, such networks create an almost unbreakable chain between asset mining and criminal activity. Thailand, like many jurisdictions, is beginning to crack down hard on such practices, which could lead to stricter regulation of the entire sector in the region.
