OpenAI has officially announced a new generation of its language models—the GPT-5.6 family. However, contrary to broad audience expectations, the release is strictly limited. - Luna (Moon) — the most affordable and cost-effective model in the lineup, designed for mass data processing with minimal expenses.
This "Sun-Earth-Moon" hierarchy is no coincidence. It directly reflects both performance levels and price categories. This is a much more understandable and memorable approach than abbreviations like GPT-4o or o1, which, in my opinion, is a smart move for scaling the audience.
Why access is limited and what it means
The reason for such strict control is the growing influence of U.S. regulators on the deployment of advanced AI. OpenAI emphasizes its commitment to openness but is currently forced to cooperate with government agencies due to the advanced capabilities of the new version. Sol's launch was preceded by weeks of manual testing, and performance was verified using over 700,000 GPU-hours in A100 equivalent.
This controlled launch is a clear signal to the market. We are witnessing a transition from the "release and see" era to the "safety first, then scaling" era. For the crypto industry, where AI is increasingly being integrated into DeFi protocols, blockchain analysis tools, and autonomous trading agents, access to powerful models becomes a critical factor.
My analysis: The limited launch of GPT-5.6 is not a technical delay but a well-thought-out political and regulatory strategy.
