The Fate of AI Giants: Mythos 5 Gets the "Green Light" in the US, While Fable 5 Remains in the Shadows
A landmark event occurred in the world of artificial intelligence on Friday: U.S. regulators lifted export restrictions on Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5 model. This decision opens access to cutting-edge technology for more than 100 organizations in the United States, including major corporations and government agencies. In effect, it ends a two-week standoff between the administration and developers that threatened the launch of two flagship products.
Mythos 5: From Secret Program to Broad Access
Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick officially confirmed that transferring Mythos 5 to organizations on Appendix A no longer requires a special license. Previously, the model was exclusively available under the Glasswing program — a vulnerability research project involving about 150 organizations from 15 countries. Notably, during government testing, Mythos identified critical errors in classified systems within hours, highlighting its enormous potential.
Fable 5: Waiting and New Rules of the Game
Unlike Mythos, the fate of the Fable 5 model remains uncertain. It was previously the most powerful public AI tool available to all subscribers, but its broad launch has now been postponed. The key reason is concern that the technology could fall into China's hands. The incident with South Korean operator SK Telecom, which was initially added to the Glasswing program and then had its access restricted, only confirms the seriousness of these risks. Notably, OpenAI has taken a similar path, restricting access to its most powerful version, GPT-5.6, called Sol, to about 20 government partners.
A new executive order signed on June 2 creates a voluntary channel for federal review of advanced AI models. Developers can submit their solutions for a 30-day cybersecurity check before launch. This effectively establishes a new control system, where Washington is tightening not only chip exports but also access to the models themselves.
Leaders of major cybersecurity companies, including former Facebook security chief Alex Stamos, as well as representatives from Nvidia, Adobe, and Zoom, urged authorities to abandon excessive restrictions. However, it is now clear: the future of Fable 5 and other powerful AI tools will be decided not in laboratories, but in the corridors of power.
Expert opinion: The unblocking of Mythos 5 is a precedent showing that the administration is ready for compromises, but only under conditions of total control. For the crypto industry and DeFi, where AI is already actively used for auditing smart contracts, this means access to the most powerful models will be strictly regulated. Europe and other regions, suddenly finding themselves dependent on Washington's decisions, must consider creating their own sovereign AI initiatives, otherwise they risk being left on the sidelines of the technological race.
