Lifting the Mythos 5 Blockade: Anthropic Gains Access to 100+ U.S. Organizations, Fable 5 Next in Line
The U.S. administration has officially lifted the two-week ban on the export of Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5 model. This decision opens access to one of the most powerful AI developments for over 100 American organizations, including major corporations and government agencies.
Mythos 5: From Glasswing to Mass Adoption
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed in a letter to Anthropic CTO Tom Brown that a separate license is no longer required to transfer Mythos 5 to organizations on Appendix A. Previously, the model was exclusively available under the Glasswing project—a vulnerability discovery program involving about 150 organizations from more than 15 countries. Notably, Mythos discovered critical errors in classified systems within hours during government testing, which initially sparked concerns.
The lifting of restrictions resulted from intense negotiations between Anthropic and the administration. The company's key investor, Amazon, had previously expressed concerns about model safety, and researchers warned that Fable 5 could be hacked for potentially dangerous purposes.
Fable 5 and the New AI Regulation Regime
Unlike Mythos, access to Fable 5 for the general public remains unavailable. Sources close to the negotiations report that the release process has moved forward, but exact timelines are not disclosed. Previously, Fable 5 was considered the most powerful public AI tool, and its blocking set a precedent.
The situation is gradually transforming into a new system of restrictions. On June 2, an executive order was signed, opening a voluntary channel for federal review of advanced AI models. Developers can submit their solutions for cybersecurity checks 30 days before launch. Over the past year, Washington has tightened the export of AI chips to China, and now similar requirements apply to access to the models themselves.
OpenAI has followed the same path, restricting access to the most powerful version of GPT-5.6, named Sol, to about 20 state-approved partners. Weaker versions, Terra and Luna, have become available to the general public.
Global Implications and Industry Pressure
Notably, many leaders of major cybersecurity companies, including former Facebook security chief Alex Stamos, as well as executives from Nvidia, Adobe, and Zoom, urged authorities to abandon restrictive measures. European countries and other regions note that they have suddenly become heavily dependent on Washington's decisions regarding access to new developments.
Expert opinion: Lifting the blockade on Mythos 5 is not so much a victory for Anthropic as a signal of a new order taking shape. We are witnessing how control over chip exports is smoothly transitioning into control over the algorithms themselves. The question is not whether Fable 5 will receive similar permissions, but what conditions will be imposed on its use. The AI market is entering an era of regulated monopoly, where access to advanced models will be determined not by market mechanisms, but by political will.
