Microsoft is accelerating post-quantum protection: deadline 2029

Microsoft is sharply accelerating its Quantum Safe Program, setting an ambitious goal to transition all critical products and services to post-quantum cryptography by 2029. This decision reflects a deep awareness of the growing threat: quantum computers capable of breaking modern cryptographic algorithms may emerge much sooner than previously anticipated.

The corporation can no longer afford to rely on old risk assessments. The shifting threat horizon demands proactive action. Microsoft has identified three key areas for immediate implementation:

  • Updating network cryptography — replacing vulnerable protocols with those resistant to quantum attacks.
  • Cryptographic agility — building an architecture capable of quickly adapting to new standards and algorithms.
  • Modernizing trust chains — revising signature systems, certificates, and update mechanisms to protect against future threats.

This is not just a technical update. It is a fundamental shift in the approach to security. The market currently underestimates the speed at which quantum computing could dismantle existing infrastructure. Microsoft, as a leader in cloud computing and enterprise software, is sending a signal to the entire sector: there is no more time to delay.

My analysis: Microsoft's decision is not just a corporate initiative but an indicator of a systemic crisis in cryptography. If the largest players are starting to rebuild their systems within five years, it means the threat of quantum hacking of Bitcoin and other blockchains is becoming a reality. Investors and developers should closely monitor these processes — the transition to post-quantum algorithms could radically change the digital asset landscape.
