The Golden Reserve of the World Cup: Why the main football trophy broke the record value

The iconic FIFA World Cup trophy, the planet's most prestigious prize, now contains approximately $713,000 worth of precious metal alone. This milestone was reached as the market price of gold confidently surpassed $4,100 per ounce. Current figures are more than double the raw material's value during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Thanks to this rapid appreciation in material costs, the trophy is officially recognized as the most expensive award among all existing sports trophies. Of course, experts estimate the cultural and historical value of this iconic prize to be significantly higher than the nominal worth of a gold bar.

The gold content of the World Cup trophy has more than doubled in value since 2022

Let's recall the historic moment when the Argentine national team lifted the coveted trophy in December 2022. At that time, the exchange value of an ounce of gold hovered around $1,600. Today, the precious metal is consistently trading above $4,100 per ounce, demonstrating a powerful rally after recovering from eight-month lows. Additional pressure on the price came from weak macroeconomic data on the US labor market. As a result, investors quickly revised their expectations regarding further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve System. Consequently, the value of nearly 5 kg of pure gold, from which the trophy is made, has increased by more than 150%. For comparison: during the previous tournament, it was approximately $277,000.

The growth was not smooth: in June, gold briefly dipped below $4,000, then sharply rose alongside Bitcoin amid renewed demand for safe-haven assets.

This version of the trophy, standing almost 37 cm tall, debuted in 1974 — at that time, the materials cost about $25,000. The 18-karat gold sculpture weighs nearly 11 pounds, and no other sports prize can compare. Tournament winners receive only a gold-plated replica; the original remains with FIFA.

Sterling silver, which serves as the base material for most other prestigious awards, showed even more impressive growth dynamics. The metal's price settled at around $62 per ounce, roughly 160% higher than the values at the Qatar final. Despite the volatility of commodity markets, FIFA officially estimates the full museum value of the original masterpiece at over $20 million, considering its unique status and rich history.

The new 2026 world champion will be determined this month. Whether the price of gold can hold at peak levels above $4,100 by the final whistle now depends on the overall sentiment in global financial markets — and this suspense is no less intense than the drama on the football field.

Analytical commentary from Cryptalist: The rise in the World Cup trophy's value is a clear indicator of inflation in safe-haven assets. For crypto investors, this is a signal: while traditional "safe havens" are appreciating, digital assets like Bitcoin can serve as an alternative hedge, especially amid the easing of Fed monetary policy. However, BTC's volatility requires more careful risk management.
