The main trophy of world football is experiencing an unprecedented increase in value. According to my calculations, based on current market quotes, the pure gold from which the World Cup is made is now estimated at approximately $713,000. This is more than double its value during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, when an ounce of the precious metal traded at around $1,600.
The rapid appreciation of gold, which has confidently surpassed the $4,100 per ounce mark, has automatically propelled the World Cup to first place among all existing sports trophies in terms of nominal material value. Of course, the cultural and historical value of this iconic prize is estimated by experts to be significantly higher than the cost of a gold bar.
World Cup's gold content has more than doubled in value since 2022
Let's recall the historic moment when the Argentine national team lifted the coveted trophy in December 2022. At that time, the exchange value of an ounce of gold was hovering around $1,600. Today, the precious metal is consistently trading above $4,100 per ounce, demonstrating a powerful rally after recovering from eight-month lows.
Additional pressure on the exchange rate came from weak macroeconomic data on the US labor market. As a result, investors quickly revised their expectations regarding further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve System. Because of this, the value of nearly 5 kg of pure gold from which the trophy is made has increased by more than 150%. For comparison: during the previous tournament, it was approximately $277,000.
The growth was not smooth: in June, gold briefly dipped below $4,000, and then, paired with Bitcoin, it surged sharply amid the return of demand for safe-haven assets.
How the World Cup stands out among other sports trophies
This version of the trophy, nearly 37 cm tall, appeared in 1974 — at that time, about $25,000 was spent on materials. The 18-karat gold sculpture weighs almost 11 pounds, and no other sports prize can compare to it. Tournament winners receive only a gilded copy: the original remains with FIFA.
Sterling silver, which serves as the base material for creating most other prestigious awards, showed even more impressive growth dynamics. The metal's price settled at around $62 per ounce, which is approximately 160% higher than the values at the final in Qatar. Despite the volatility of commodity markets, FIFA officially estimates the full museum value of the original masterpiece at over $20 million, taking into account its unique status and rich history.
Similar trends can be seen in North American sports, albeit on a much smaller scale. The famous Borg-Warner Trophy, awarded to the winner of the Indianapolis 500 race, contains about 69 kilograms of pure silver. If melted down, this metal could be sold for approximately $156,000. Meanwhile, the Vince Lombardi Trophy has a silver base worth about $7,230, and the prestigious Europa League trophy is estimated at around $22,600.
What the gold rally means for markets
Consistently high demand for traditional safe-haven assets continues to provide strong support to the precious metals market. Major investors are carefully analyzing the future monetary policy of the Federal Reserve System against the backdrop of steadily falling crude oil prices. During this week, gold has firmly held positions above $4,000, while oil futures continue to lose value.
The cryptocurrency sector is currently influenced by the exact same macroeconomic factors. Just recently, the Bitcoin exchange rate once again crossed the important psychological mark of $60,000. This happened immediately after the official statement by Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh about the expected easing of overall inflationary pressure. According to observations by leading analysts, institutional investors prefer to actively shift capital into real commodities against the backdrop of a prolonged crypto winter.
At the same time, well-known financial experts like Robert Kiyosaki remain firmly convinced that physical gold remains the irreplaceable safe-haven tool during periods of turbulence.
The new 2026 world champion will be determined this month. Whether the price of gold can hold at peak values above $4,100 by the time of the final whistle now depends on the overall sentiment in global financial markets — and this intrigue is no less intense than the passions on the football field.
