Russia's largest bank, Sberbank, has announced plans to launch its own infrastructure for working with digital currencies. This involves creating a crypto wallet and a digital depository, which will become available to clients immediately after the relevant regulations come into force. This is a landmark step that could radically change the landscape of the Russian crypto market.
Roadmap and Launch Timeline
Kirill Tsarev, First Deputy Chairman of the bank's executive board, confirmed that the technical foundation for operations will be ready by the start of winter. The service launch is scheduled for several months after the law "On Digital Currency and Digital Rights" comes into effect, which, according to Central Bank estimates, will take effect on September 1. Thus, clients will be able to use the new functionality through the "Sberbank Online" and "SberInvestments" apps by the end of this year.
The key stages of the project are as follows:
- Law coming into effect: September 1.
- Infrastructure and depository readiness: December 1.
- Test launch of the interface: during winter.
Tsarev also noted that the final schedule will be approved after the publication of the final text of the regulatory act, and the release speed largely depends on the rules for placing updated software in app stores. It is likely that owners of Android devices will see the new functionality earlier than others.
New Market Model and Competition
Alongside Sberbank, VTB and the T-Bank group have also announced the creation of similar platforms for storing digital assets. The Moscow Exchange has also announced the start of trading in new instruments by the end of the year. This race for the crypto market is intensifying against the backdrop of strict deadlines set by the regulator. Domestic trading operations could start as early as November 2026, and the transition period for adaptation will last until July 1, 2027.
The Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Russia are jointly developing a new model for the financial sector, which involves creating a pool of licensed companies. These organizations will have the right to maintain asset records, conduct trading, exchange digital currency for fiat money, and facilitate cross-border settlements. Individuals will be able to conduct transactions on local platforms after mandatory testing and within strict limits.
Cryptalist Analysis: Sberbank's entry into the crypto market is not just another piece of news, but a signal of the full legalization and institutionalization of digital assets in Russia. Given the bank's scale and client base, the launch of its own wallet and depository could become a catalyst for mass adoption of cryptocurrencies among retail investors. The only question is how flexible the final regulatory rules will be: overly strict limits could negate the entire potential of this movement.
