Artificial intelligence continues to penetrate areas traditionally considered the prerogative of humans. This time, AI startup Anthropic, known for its Claude model, announced the launch of the Claude Science platform and ambitious plans to independently develop drugs for so-called "neglected" diseases. The announcement was made at The Briefing: AI for Science event, where the company presented a scientific environment that integrates disparate tools and datasets, and also allows for building graphs and visualizations.
According to reports, the product has already found application among clients in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. However, the key difference between Anthropic and its competitors — OpenAI, Amazon, and Google, which also offer medical AI tools — is that the company is not limiting itself to the role of a software provider. Anthropic has for the first time voiced its intention to independently develop drugs, rather than just providing a technological platform.
Details on specific research areas and types of diseases have not yet been disclosed. However, it is known that over the past year, Anthropic has been actively hiring biologists and building its own laboratories. University of Cambridge professor and co-founder of CardiaTec, Namshik Han, confirmed that the company approached his colleagues from academia with recruitment offers. Moreover, Anthropic has poached some specialists from giants such as AstraZeneca, Novo Nordisk, and GSK.
AI in Medicine: Reality and Expectations
Experts note that artificial intelligence is already actively used at various stages of drug development — from searching for and optimizing chemical compounds to data analysis and clinical trials. However, according to University College London professor Matthew Todd, the phrase "drug development using AI" is too broad. In practice, such systems rather accelerate research and help pre-validate ideas, but they do not replace experiments and human labor.
University of Oxford professor Frank von Delft emphasized that potential drugs still need to be tested for efficacy, toxicity, and suitability for storage and delivery. Clinical trials are the most expensive, and AI is not yet capable of replacing this stage. Scientists agree that it is still a long way off before "AI drugs" approved for humans appear, due to the complexity of obtaining regulatory approvals and the lack of publicly available high-quality experimental data.
