Russia's largest bank, Sberbank, has announced plans to launch its own cryptocurrency wallet and digital depository. This event marks an important stage in the legalization and institutionalization of the cryptocurrency market in Russia. The launch of the services is scheduled immediately after the relevant regulation comes into effect, highlighting the bank's systematic approach to the new asset class.

First Deputy Chairman of the Bank's Management Board, Kirill Tsarev, revealed details of the project. According to him, the new infrastructure will be integrated into familiar interfaces — the Sberbank Online and SberInvestments applications. The key trigger for the launch will be the enactment of the law "On Digital Currency and Digital Rights," which is expected to come into effect on September 1.

The technical foundation for operations with digital currencies will be prepared by the beginning of winter. The basic plan for creating the infrastructure is as follows:

Project StagePlanned Timeline
Enactment of the relevant lawSeptember 1
Infrastructure and depository readinessDecember 1
Test launch of the interfaceDuring winter

Tsarev noted that the final schedule will be approved after the publication of the final text of the regulatory act. The speed of the release will largely depend on the rules for placing updated software in app stores. Likely, owners of Android devices will see the new functionality before others.

The bank is also exploring the possibility of obtaining agent status, which would allow citizens to trade on foreign platforms through domestic intermediaries. The final decision will depend on the final regulatory rules within the country and the position of foreign partners.

The race for the crypto market is accelerating

Statements from the industry leader significantly intensify competition. Previously, VTB and the T-Bank group announced the creation of similar platforms for storing digital assets. At the same time, the Moscow Exchange announced the start of trading in new instruments by the end of the current year.

The high speed of preparation is explained by the regulator's tight deadlines. Trading operations within the country could start as early as November 2026. A special transition period for adaptation will last until July 1, 2027. During this time, companies must enter the official register, as from mid-2027, criminal liability will begin to apply for violations of the legislation.

The new model of the financial sector is being jointly developed by the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Russia. The rules provide for the creation of a pool of licensed companies that will have the right to maintain asset records, conduct trading, exchange digital currency for fiat money, and ensure cross-border settlements. Individuals will be able to make transactions on local platforms after mandatory testing and within strict limits.

My analysis: This step by Sberbank is not just an entry into a new market, but a strategic maneuver to maintain dominance in the era of digital finance. The integration of crypto services into familiar banking applications could radically change the market landscape, attracting millions of conservative users who previously avoided cryptocurrencies due to complexity and risks. However, success will entirely depend on the flexibility and transparency of the new regulation.
