Robinhood Chairman and CEO Vladimir Tenev revealed impressive data: even before the official launch of the Trump Accounts program, 6 million underage users had registered on the app. Moreover, the platform instantly shot to the top of the App Store charts, confirming the enormous interest in the new tool.
What are Trump Accounts?
The Trump Accounts program consists of tax-advantaged investment accounts designed for children born in the United States between 2025 and 2028. The key feature is a one-time government contribution of $1,000 from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Funds are automatically deposited into the account after processing IRS Form 4547 and activating the child's profile.
Any minor with a valid Social Security number can open an account. Not only parents, but also relatives, friends, and even employers are allowed to contribute to the balance. Additionally, contributions from qualified donors, including non-profit organizations and state government entities, are permitted.
How it works and investing mechanism
Official acceptance of contributions began on July 4. Incoming funds are automatically directed into a standard low-cost index fund focused on long-term growth. All operations—from deposits to tracking returns and projected growth—are available directly within the app.
When the child turns 18, the account is converted into a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA), and full control transfers to the owner. From that point, the young adult can continue investing or begin withdrawing funds in accordance with the rules applicable to such accounts.
It is important to emphasize that the program is directly associated with the name of the U.S. President and was created under the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," signed by Donald Trump on July 4, 2025. Initially, the accounts were planned as Invest America accounts, then named MAGA accounts, and finally renamed Trump Accounts at the final stage.
Cryptalist Analysis: 6 million registrations before the official launch is not just a record, but a signal of a fundamental shift in the perception of investments among American families. The Trump Accounts program could become a powerful catalyst for long-term growth in retail investments, and I expect other brokers to follow Robinhood's lead by integrating similar tax-advantaged accounts. However, it is worth remembering that any investment carries risk, and actual results are not guaranteed.
