Crypto exchange Coinbase has taken a landmark step by obtaining a license under the MiFID standard in the UK. This is not just another regulatory formality — the company is now officially authorized to offer British users traditional financial instruments, including stocks and derivatives.
This decision fundamentally changes the rules of the game. Previously, Coinbase in the UK already had permission to issue electronic money and registration as a crypto asset service provider. The new license complements this set, transforming the exchange's British division into a full-fledged investment hub.
What does the license unlock?
Institutional and advanced traders gain access to derivatives: perpetual futures on cryptocurrencies, stocks, and commodities. Retail users, for the first time, will be able to trade stocks directly on the Coinbase platform.
According to the company's estimates, this is just the first set of instruments. The MiFID license solidifies Coinbase's positioning as one of the most comprehensively regulated market participants. The company cites a study by the UK regulator FCA, according to which about 7 million adult residents of the country already own cryptocurrency. Notably, a quarter of those who do not yet hold crypto assets are ready to enter the sector with proper regulation.
Betting on financial convergence
Coinbase is betting on a model of a "single platform for the user's entire financial life with one login." In recent months, the exchange launched savings and credit products in the UK, and the new authorization opens the next stage.
According to the company's analysts, the gap between traditional and digital finance is rapidly narrowing. The UK is becoming one of the first markets where users will see this convergence in practice. Notably, Coinbase highly praises the approach of the authorities and the FCA, calling the regulatory framework being formed in the country "growth-oriented." In their view, high regulatory standards and innovation do not contradict but rather reinforce each other.
My analysis: Obtaining the MiFID license is a strategic move that takes Coinbase beyond the scope of a purely crypto exchange. We are witnessing the beginning of the convergence of traditional and digital markets, where trust through regulation becomes a key factor. For British users, this means access to a universal financial supermarket, which could significantly increase competition among traditional brokers and banks.
