The issuer of the largest stablecoin USDT — Tether — has closed a strategic funding round for the Brazilian crypto platform Mercado Bitcoin, investing $20 million. This is not just another deal, but a clear signal of Tether's intention to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing Latin American region.
What the funds will be used for
The raised capital will be directed toward developing key areas: payment infrastructure, tokenization of real-world assets, lending, and capital markets. Mercado Bitcoin is one of the oldest and largest crypto exchanges in Brazil, and for Tether, this is an opportunity not just to acquire a stake in the platform, but to embed its stablecoin into the fabric of the local financial system.
Brazil is one of the most active cryptocurrency markets in the world. High inflation, instability of the national currency, and growing interest in DeFi create ideal conditions for stablecoins. Tether, as the dominant player in this segment, seeks to solidify its presence before competitors (e.g., USDC or BUSD) take similar steps.
Expert opinion
The investment in Mercado Bitcoin is not just a financial deal, but a strategic alliance. Tether gains a direct channel to promote USDT in the largest economy in Latin America, while Mercado Bitcoin gains access to the issuer's liquidity and technological expertise. In the long term, this could accelerate the adoption of tokenized assets in the region, especially in lending and payments backed by real-world assets.
In my view, we are witnessing the beginning of a more aggressive expansion by Tether beyond traditional markets. Latin America, with its high unbanked population and inflationary pressures, remains one of the most promising territories for stablecoins. If Tether succeeds in establishing a dominant position in Brazil's payment infrastructure, it will be a serious blow to local fiat systems and will strengthen the role of USDT as a global means of settlement.
