The team behind the Ethereum layer-2 solution Base has officially activated the B20 standard on the mainnet. This step opens up new opportunities for launching stablecoins, RWAs, and other fungible tokens directly on the platform.

B20 is not just another standard. It includes built-in mechanisms for controlling issuance and circulation: access roles, supply limits, transfer rules, minting and burning functions, as well as the ability to pause operations and add notes to transactions. This approach significantly enhances security and asset management flexibility.

It is important to note that B20 tokens are fully compatible with assets on the ERC-20 standard. This means they will be supported by existing wallets and trading platforms without requiring any additional modifications.

Two Options: Asset and Stablecoin

The B20 mechanism provides two implementation options: Asset and Stablecoin. The first allows setting between 6 and 18 decimal places, which is ideal for tokens with varying degrees of divisibility. The second option uses a fixed six decimal places and requires specifying the fiat currency of denomination — for example, the US dollar or the euro. This makes B20 particularly attractive for stablecoin issuers.

B20 is part of the Beryl upgrade, which was activated on the mainnet on June 25, 2026. The update also reduced the finalization window for regular withdrawals from seven to five days and added the Reth V2 client iteration. However, the launch was not without technical difficulties.

Technical Incidents

On June 25 and 26, Base experienced two block production stoppages — lasting 116 and 20 minutes, respectively. In the post-mortem, the team linked both incidents to a bug in the sequencer logic. This underscores that even with thorough testing, new updates can encounter unforeseen issues.

As a reminder, in February, the network's developers announced a transition from the Optimism technology stack to their own unified architecture. The activation of B20 is another step towards greater autonomy and control over the ecosystem.

My analysis: The introduction of B20 is a strategically sound move for Base. The standard not only simplifies token issuance but also increases trust among institutional investors, for whom control and transparency mechanisms are critically important. However, the recent outages serve as a reminder that the path to decentralization and stability is rarely smooth. The market will be closely watching how the team addresses these challenges.
