The European consortium QUARTERNEXT has officially launched a large-scale four-year project aimed at developing and certifying quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. The initiative is coordinated by the Spanish company Luxquanta, with notable participants including Quside, Chilas, fragmentiX, telecommunications giant Telefónica, and the Austrian Institute of Technology.

This project is not just another research program. It is funded under the strategic Digital Europe program and is directly linked to the ambitious European initiative EuroQCI, which aims to create a hack-proof communication infrastructure across the continent. The QUARTERNEXT team's main focus is on CV-QKD (Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution) technology. Unlike more traditional approaches, CV-QKD allows cryptographic keys to be transmitted over existing fiber-optic networks, using quantum effects to detect any signal interception.

From a practical standpoint, the success of QUARTERNEXT could radically change the security landscape for financial institutions, government agencies, and critical infrastructure operators. Integrating quantum-secured communication channels could render traditional "man-in-the-middle" attacks or data interception useless. However, the key challenge remains not only creating reliable systems but also certifying and scaling them to a commercial level—this is precisely what the consortium will address.
